about

Originally released on the wonderful Ba Da Bing records on cassette (sold out, natch), The West Is A Mess is perhaps Earth Jerks most musically "ambitious" release to date. Syrupy, psychedelic organ-grind. A distillation of Sunshine, surf and all that's wrong with California and the world at large today. Heavy vibes for those who look to the lighter side of life.

"The West Is a Mess was crafted on a delightfully simple setup: "One guy, a keyboard, a few pedals, and that's it," says the tape's description. Furthermore, Dixon classifies the music as "surf-rock" and specifies its reference points as "Sunset Strip '66," not "Berlin or Cologne '72."

All of which is quite accurate: Mess sounds and feels like a collection of classic psychedelic rock jams, reduced to their most basic constituents. It's remarkable how closely Dixon is able to mimic the fuzzed-out tone of classic psych rock guitar with his meager setup; each track varies little, but each seems to contain infinity within it."
